An interesting collection with some rarities

I recently purchased this recording, and while it isn't the most exciting Strauss disc in my collection, it does have some rare and enjoyable moments. The first waltz, by Johann Strauss I, is an enjoyable example of tailoring one's music to the tastes of the audience, with some British national airs in 3/4 time. A number of the shorter works (particularly the Exeter polka, and the Quadrilles) are quite delightful...though not performed with a great deal of energy. The true highlights on this recording for me were the waltzes by Eduard Strauss (an enjoyable set of melodies, with some interesting instrumental effects in the string section) called "Greeting Waltz," and the "Coronation Waltz" by Johann Strauss III. So far as I know, this is the only digital recording of a waltz by this representative of the famous Strauss family, and I think it acquits itself quite well, really. So, if you are a serious collector of some of the rarer Strauss family pieces, this recording is probably worth it. I only wish that more of Eduard Strauss's waltzes (and perhaps a few more of Johann III's) were available. There seems to be more enjoyable music here than "Bahn Frei" and a few other schnell-polkas!
